I hear so much about fishing on points, but what is the best way to do it?

Question:
I hear so much about fishing on points, but I am not sure exactly the best way to do this. For example when approaching a point should I first go over it with my electronics and if so how close/far away do I get from the shore? Will this scare the fish? Once I find something interesting on the point how long do I fish it before moving on? There are so many points I am not sure how long to stay on one before trying another. If I do not find some interesting on the point with the electronics should I even bother fishing it?

Answer:
I fish a point back and forth once and if I don't get bait I go to the next one. Going a cross a point with your graph is a good idea to see if there are any bait fish. If I see baitfish or any activity I will pay more attention to it. And I will try different baits that cover different depths of the water column. Thanks for your question and good luck on your next fishing trip.
