It’s A Match

Mike Webb

The most common element that destroys our stored baits is moisture. Moisture can either be let in to your tackle boxes or be formed there. The formation of moisture is created by condensation resulting from changing temperatures or rain. Letting moisture accumulate in any areas of your boat or storage containers can damage your tackle. Dampness will not affect just one or two hooks either. It can damage all your hooks, split rings, tools and any other metal parts.

There are a few different ways to alleviate this problem. The easiest and most effective way to get rid of moisture or rain once it is in your tackle areas is to open up all your storage spaces and tackle boxes and let them dry out naturally—preferably in the sun. A pro-active approach is to break up several matchsticks or toothpicks and place them throughout your tackle boxes. These will absorb the moisture that comes in and greatly reduce the chance of having your baits and equipment ruined.

There are also products available at Bass Pro Shops and other tackle shops that are especially made for absorption of moisture. These can work well too.

Let nature work for you and open up your boat storage spaces and tackle boxes as often as possible. A few hours in the sun is going to dry out places and equipment you did not even know were damp. If you store your boat inside your garage or shop on a regular basis it is a good idea to keep your storage lids open. This will allow air to circulate through them, reduce possible condensation, and once again might dry out areas you did not realize were wet.

The bottom line, take a few moments to make sure your boats storage compartments stay dry. These small steps will save you a lot of money and time.
