What are your thoughts on braided line?
Aaron Martin
When you get a chance, can you give your thoughts on braided line. Sometimes I see you use it and then you go back to 17# mono? Also, if using braided, should I use a leader?

Answer:
Braid works wonderful in vegetation, because it cuts through it and you can use higher tinsel strength as a result of its smaller diameter (ie... 50-80lb test) preventing less break-off's and loss of fish. Likewise with almost zero stretch and buoyancy properties, braided line works well for top-water.
The downside to braid is that it is more visible than mono or fluorocarbon. When the water is clear with less cover I normally opt for fluorocarbon when using jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, etc. and mono for topwater as it floats (fluorocarbon sinks). I hardly ever use braid for a treble hook application since it has no stretch and can easily pull the hooks out of their mouths.
I do like to use braid (15lb test) with a fluorocarbon leader (normally 8lb) for spinning gear. Braid last for ever, it has no memory (thus you don't get line twist or those nasty loops). Additionally, it is extra sensitive and helps detect strikes and ensures a good hookset (because it has no stretch) when drop-shotting and fishing deep.
I hope this helps and best of luck both on and off the water.
