What is the best type of rod and reel to purchase for a true beginner?

I'm just getting started in fishing and I'm wondering what would be the best type of rod and reel to purchase for a true beginner. I'll be fishing mostly farm ponds and river banks. Thanks!

My recommendation for a great all around rod and reel outfit is either a 6ft. or 6ft-6inch medium action spinning rod and spinning reel to match. Spool it up with 8 to 10 pound monofilament or flourocarbon line and you can fish a lot of different lures and techniques. While baitcasting equipment is fine and if preferred I would recommend the same actions and lengths, however this outfit will not overpower allowing you to enjoy the fish your going to catch in most farm ponds and riverbanks.
