When I go to a new lake what is the best way to locate fish?

Question:
When I go to a new lake I have never fished before, how is the best way to locate fish?

Answer:
I normally start by looking at the seasonal conditions (ie. pre-spawn, spawn, etc.) and look for details on a lake map that match a "high-percentage area".  For instance, pre-spawn fish will be located in what is commonly referred to as staging areas. To find areas such as this I will look for secondary points close to pea-gravel spawning areas.

Once I have identified areas on a map that match the seasonal conditions I am faced with I will then go to those areas and perhaps investigate further with the my electronics to get a better understanding of how the area actually is compared to the map.

I keep a log book for every trip and this serves as a huge asset for the future and knowing what the fish are responding to and where they are holding at different times of the year.  Even though I may not be on the same lake, I can still use the information to narrow my search and eliminate water.  I also suggest speaking with local baitshop owners, researching the internet and past tournament results based on the time of year you will be fishing the new lake.

Good luck both on and off the water!  Aaron Martin, Show Host
